The Anatomy of a Book: ISBN & Barcodes

During the publishing process of books and eBooks, publishers and authors will register their work with a unique set of numbers, referred to as the ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

Prior to January 1st,  2007, ISBNs were made up of a unique set of 10 digits, now they consist of 13 numbers.

Each ISBN can only be used once and is used worldwide, allowing publishers and authors alike to identify books internationally in a standardised format.

Does my self-published book need an ISBN and Barcode

Do I need an ISBN for my Book?

This all depends on the purpose and objective of your book. Traditionally, a book is considered "Published" when it has been registered and assigned with its own unique identification number (ISBN), without this, your book is considered a printed book.

Whilst this certainly does not reflect on the quality of content or your ability to distribute amongst your network, distribution through traditional retail channels will require an ISBN and Barcode. As will registering and listing your book in local and state libraries.

Barcodes & ISBNs:

A Barcode is a machine readable code, being a pattern of parallel lines and numbers of varying widths. Commonly used for tracking inventory and sales, and certainly a requirement of the larger book retailers.

With the different types of Barcodes available, it is worth noting the type of barcode required for a Book is the Bookland EAN or EAN-13 Barcode.

ISBN's and Barcodes

How to get an ISBN & Barcode assigned:

If you are working with a boutique book publisher, a coach or book designer who specialises in this field, chances are, they will provide you with an ISBN and Barcode. Using publishing platforms such as Createspace can get you a free ISBN and barcode.

If your plan is to have your book available for retail in store display distribution as well as having your book available at your local and state library, it is recommended to either buy your own or have one allocated via a registered publishing company.

Grabb Publishing is a registered publishing company and we do sell ISBN and barcodes for independent authors. Click on the "chat with me" button to organise one for your book.

The other alternative is to go through the Bowkers website (the company that issues ISBN's and barcodes) www.myidentifiers.com

A single ISBN will cover the format of one book. If you are publishing your book both in printed and kindle format, you will need two ISBN numbers. They do not expire and are a once off purchase.
